the nice pep daily charge: “adopt the pace of nature, her furtively is patience.” ralph waldo emersonnature doesn’t rush to the next condition. summer runs its order Levaquin leg of the rally, and gently passes the baton to fall. fall does its thing, and gently evolves into winter. winter to spring. spring to summer.

throughout the course of a year, there’s a masterful congruity of survive experiences. some would label these experiences “good” or “bad.”if you like the summer season, you’d likely say winter is “bad.” if you find agreeable the go down occasion, you power think spring is “bad.”but these labels are simply ones created by you … to suit your agenda, and your current personal preferences. the person seniority next to you might have the exact opposite label process.

in my opinion, the goal in life is to reach the up on of awareness that causes you to be at peace, and in a state of consistent joy, no matter what season of life you’re experiencing.allow the seasons of life (segment #13 of hard-cover 1) to change around you … that’s what they do. but attempt not to allow the change in seasons … to change your “you”.as you’re able to cultivate this level of toleration (segment #36 of book 1) and adroitness, you can easily manage the natural changes that come into your life, and look forward to the new season on its way, while stilly appreciating the beauty of the current season you’re experiencing.

some folks extent with “seasonal depression” (i be informed, because i used to be one of them), and this is really just a subconscious fear of change.you tend to be comfortable with how things are, and don’t love to rock the boat too much. so when a new season (naturally) arrives, something inside you recognizes this as change … and you begin to unconsciously endure it, and in this obstruction, you invent discomfort or depression in your life.i’ve at no time been to a shrink, or completed any actual examination on the prone to, that’s honourable my own observational analysis on what happens. call me dr. meticulous if you opt. come lyric down on my couch if you need to. ;]

there there. now tell me all your problems. i’ll make them all more advisedly. ;]any dang way, here’s the explanation to staying in your “peace space” as the seasons of life change: ascetically embrace nature’s truth. it’s perfect togetherness! it doesn’t get all pissy when draw back shows up. it understands that summer has had its shape, and in pattern to stay in perfect compatibility, support needs to do its thing.it’s the done exact thing with your life. take that, in order for your life to be in perfect harmony, you’ve gotta clinch the natural (nature) changes!today’s blog sponsored by:

Pembroke Pop Warner Football is in the spotlight!

Almost.

For the second year in a row, NorthEast-Eagle Electrical Distributors, in conjunction with WEEI-AM, is presenting the New Friday Night Lights 2008 Sweepstakes.

Thirteen communities from all over New England have chance to win a brand new sports lighting system for their youth football league field. This event gives youth and junior football players, their parents and their community a wonderful gift that will last for years.

This year, Pop Warner Football President Robert Colangeli entered Pembroke into the competition.

To enter, Colangeli had to write an essay and submit a photo of the field of his choice, which in this case was the football field at the High School, Titan Field.

In his essay he said that the “High School has been great to Pop Warner. They let us use their practice fields and on some Sundays their game field. We now have six football teams and because we have no lights some teams play their games on the old practice fields while others play on the high school field. With lights our young children would benefit because they could all play at the same location. With lights we all would benefit.”

Not only would the lights benefit youth football and cheerleading, it would also increase the number of people who attend Friday games at the high school, said Colangeli.

“If the field had lights it would open up more scheduling opportunities for all of the sports for the high school and youth level. And for Friday and Saturday night games for football it would be great for people,” he said.

Now, the fate of Friday Night Lights is in the hands of Pembroke residents.

In order to win, residents must go to the Web site and vote for the town of their choice.

Voting will continue until November 16 and the winner will be announced December 1. The lights go to the town that garners the most support for their home turf.

Getting the lights would mean Pembroke could save money on renting lights and equipment for one-time use.

“They tried in the past to rent portable lighting for one Friday night game but you have to rent 10 towers and tow them in and wheel them onto the turf field just for one game,” said Colangeli.

The other 12 towns participating in the contest are Lincoln and East Greenwich, R.I, as well as Walpole, Franklin, Mendon, Shrewsbury, Worcester, Beverly, and Groton and two towns in Connecticut.

“It’d be fantastic for the high school, and the community,” said Colangeli.

FOX News’ Obama smearathon continued on last night’s (10/30/08) Hannity & Colmes. The show opened with reporter Griff Jenkins ambushing respected scholar and author and Palestinian advocate Rashid Khalidi, the latest vehicle for GOP/FOX News attacks on Barack Obama. Not surprisingly, Khalidi refused to talk to Jenkins. Sean Hannity offered this “fair and balanced” framing for the ensuing discussion: “So why is it every time we find one of these associates of Barack Obama, they run away and refuse to say anything? Why do they all seem to look so guilty?” Video after the jump.

NaNoWriMo: Ten Years of Literary Abandon

It’s nearly that time of the year ? November. November is National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), and I’ll be joining the craziness and chaos of writing a novel in thirty days along with thousands and thousands of people world-wide.

It was ten years ago that a small group of 21 people in San Fransisco came up with the idea. It remained a kind-of West Coast thing for several years but in the last few has exploded to an international event with over 100,000 people participating in NaNoWriMo last year. (There are already more than 70,000 signed up for 2008).

Dancing obama

The concept is easy ? starting midnight November 1st through 11:59pm on November 30th, you write a 50,000 word novel. Thirty days. Fifty-thousand words…or 1,667 words per day. This will be my third year participating, and I can’t wait. I was able to eek out a win last year even going on vacation for a week. In the NaNoWriMo world, a “win” is getting 50,000 words cranked out before the end of the month.

The concept is also simple ? get words on paper (or saved in electronic format). You are focused on the quantity of words, not the quality. Part of the theory of using an absurd amount of time and a large number of words is that it forces the internal editor to take a back-seat, and that the primary barrier to writing a novel is getting words down in a format that can be edited…

As the NaNoWriMo about page details it:

Valuing enthusiasm and perseverance over painstaking craft, NaNoWriMo is a novel-writing program for everyone who has thought fleetingly about writing a novel but has been scared away by the time and effort involved.

Because of the limited writing window, the ONLY thing that matters in NaNoWriMo is output. It’s all about quantity, not quality. The kamikaze approach forces you to lower your expectations, take risks, and write on the fly.

Make no mistake: You will be writing a lot of crap. And that’s a good thing. By forcing yourself to write so intensely, you are giving yourself permission to make mistakes. To forgo the endless tweaking and editing and just create. To build without tearing down.

As I wrote last year – you have permission to fail.

While the concept is easy and simple ? the application is less so.

Throughout November the folks at NaNoWriMo headquarters send out pep-talk email messages and produce regular podcasts. The forums are also both a great place for encouragement, ideas (for things like character ideas, plot ideas, and answers to the questions you have to make your scene more realistic) as well as a great place to totally waste time while procrastinating or fighting writer’s block.

So, I know a couple of GeekDad readers are fellow participants in NaNoWriMo. If there are more, drop me a quick email with your NaNoWriMo name and I’ll add you as a writing buddy.

If you aren’t already signed up, what the heck are you waiting for? The craziness, the chaos, the frustration, and most importantly the FUN make for an unforgettable month.

There’s been a lot in the news lately about who should and shouldn’t get tax cuts. Well, a new study finds that some tax filers are giving themselves tax cuts by misreporting their income, and the worst offenders are those with incomes between $500,000 and $1 million.

Joel Slemrod of the University of Michigan business school and Andrew Jones, an IRS economist, just came out with a study showing that 21 percent of those with incomes between $500,000 and $1 million misreported their adjusted gross income in 2001. Contrast that to the 8 percent noncompliance rate for those with incomes between $50,000 and $100,000. The “misreporting rate” includes underreporting income and inappropriate deductions. Additionally, those with incomes of $200,000 or more received 25 percent of the nation’s income but accounted for 40 percent of net underreported income and 42 percent of underreported taxes in 2001.

Most likely, the high noncompliance rates among the wealthy are not due to lower moral standards but rather because it is easier for them to misreport their income. Those earning over $500,000 usually have many different sources of income, including income from self-employed earnings, rent, partnerships and S corporations, and capital gains. In comparison, those whose only income is from wages cannot choose what to report to the IRS; their employers do that for them and withhold their taxes.

interestingly, slemrod and jones found that only 11 percent of those earning $2 million or more underreported their income. however, slemrod warns that number could be low as these millionaires may be particularly good at hiding income even from irs research auditors, such as through decidedly sophisticated noncompliance techniques and swiss bank accounts.

With an estimated tax gap of $345 billion in 2001, can’t we at least agree that it’s time we spread the auditors around and give the rich their fair share?

At today’s Metro board meeting, the group unanimously approved a pilot program that would extend Red Line hours until 3:00 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays from November through January 3rd. Yes, Los Angeles will finally have a subway that operates until 3:00 a.m… well, at least for a short period of time.

The approved motion allows for the program to begin on November 1st, but “those familiar with the discussions have indicated the 14th as a more realistic launch,” notes blogdowntown who has been following the issue closely. The program will only exist on the backs of private businesses donating funds, which are due by October 17.

with solely 40 days communistic until the 2008 presidential election, there’s no doubt that things are heating up. as the candidates contest it out on the main manoeuvre, conversations at home are bound to turn to politics. parents, of course, have a huge influence over a child’s developing political leanings. and parents who feel strongly about an issue are sure to pass those feelings on to their kids.whether or not it was his due to his parents’ influence, a colorado boy is pretty certain that, if he was of voting time eon, he wouldn’t be casting his vote for barack obama. the boy wore a handmade t-shirt to school that declared, “obama: a terrorist’s most qualified friend.” the private school gave the boy three choices — interchange his clothes, turn the shirt inside out, or get suspended. the boy chose ejection, and now his family plans to sue. hooo, boy.the kids is citing first repay rights, of sure, while the school partition says it has a right to ban any clothing that interferes with learning. i think that the devotees community did the right thing. the shirt was inflammatory, and they gave the boy several options to avoid debarring. but i’m sure there are others who think this is a ribald violation of this boy’s rights. where do you stand on the issue?

Steve Clemons: Bush Does a 9/11 Replay in Asking for Unprecedented Powers and Unprecedented Budget

Just after the September 11th terrorist attacks occurred, George W. Bush went before the nation and made the case that he needed unprecedented authority — budgetary and military — to take on the threats poised at the well-being and safety of the country.

Now with the current economic crisis in the United States, Bush is yet again asking for unprecedented powers and budget.

What happened after 9/11?

We saw no-bid contracts given to firms like Halliburton. We saw $9 billion of U.S. taxpayer money “go missing” through the Coalition Provisional Authority. We saw abuses of power, the expansion of secrecy, and the promulgation of norms that seemed to be the very antithesis of what America stands for.

A nation’s values and its deep DNA are really only knowable and observable during times of crisis — when it’s tough to stand up for codes that seem a heavy burden during tough times.

We are in a crisis again — and the Bush administration is again asking Americans to forgo fundamental values.

Tonight, George Bush succeeded I think in scaring Americans that this crisis could be a systemic threat. Bush said “our entire economy is in danger.”

That’s the fear button. He pushed it. And he said the clock was ticking.

This seems like a bad episode of “24.”

What is shocking about the presentation by Bush — and the deal that is unfolding is that we don’t see any acceptance of responsibility for the failure of his team’s stewardship of the economy. We didn’t hear acknowledgment that the compulsive deregulation mantra of Bush’s political and economic allies created a bubble where billionaires were created and now tens of millions are holding the bill.

We didn’t hear Bush say that it’s time to reverse the tax cuts that he helped put in place to further help those who have already benefited from the perverse finance and housing bubble that was pumped up.

We didn’t hear a firm commitment from Bush to help the holders of these sub-prime and adjustable rate mortgages keep in their homes and to help them stabilize their life and neighborhood and job situations — while these financial firms are bailed out.

Ahmadinejad: ‘American empire’ nearing its end

We probably do need to float major funds into the financial sector — but there needs to be a quid pro quo written in — a new social contract that does away with the “winner takes all syndrome” that has helped rot out America’s economic promise.

And we need to hear what comes after the bail out. This nation is heading into recession — and is probably already there.

We need to trigger real growth in the real economy with real jobs — and that’s infrastructure. We need an infrastructure commitment and a capital budget that helps make sure that some of this massive amount of money being let loose into the system actually gets some traction in rebuilding the nation’s roads, bridges, schools, hospitals, and telecom infrastructure.

That was missing — and it must be part of this debate.
